An ancient shrine in Sakamoto-machi, Yanagawa, said to have been founded in 1290 when a spirit was invited from the Hiyoshi Taisha of Omi. Known before the Meiji era as "Sanno-gu," it became the guardian shrine of Yanagawa Castle and later received the devotion of domain lords Tanaka Yoshimasa and Tachibana Muneshige. Known locally as "Sanno-san," it remains Yanagawa's chief tutelary shrine.
According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded in 1290 when a spirit was invited from the Hiyoshi Taisha at Sakamoto in Omi Province (present-day Shiga).
