The Kurushima Strait has long been known as one of the most turbulent tidal currents in the Seto Inland Sea. The Kurushima Murakami clan, lords of this strait, submitted to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his unification of Japan. Their chief, Kurushima Michifusa, served in Hideyoshi's naval forces in the 1592 Korean invasion. Hideyoshi's 1588 Piracy Prohibition Decree also ended the long-standing practice of collecting passage tolls here.
