Tokugawa Ieyasu founded this Jōdo-sect temple in 1613 to pray for the repose of Nitta Yoshishige, ancestor of the Nitta clan. He invited Donryū, the 56th head of Chion-in, as founding priest. Under Ieyasu's patronage the temple flourished, and Donryū's compassion in sheltering poor children gave rise to the beloved "Kosodate Donryū" tradition of child-rearing prayers.
