In 1582, while Hashiba Hideyoshi besieged this castle by flooding it, Oda Nobunaga was killed in Kyoto by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide (the Honno-ji Incident). On hearing the news, Hideyoshi quickly made peace with the Mori clan and rushed back to Kyoto in the famous "Great Return from Chugoku," a turning point shaped by Nobunaga's death.
