Overview
Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine in Komatsu City, Ishikawa, is famous as the setting of the kabuki play 'Kanjincho.' Adjacent to the site of the Ataka Barrier where Benkei outwitted the guard Togashi to protect Yoshitsune in 1187, it is known as the 'Shrine of the Gate Guardian.' Statues of Benkei, Yoshitsune, and Togashi stand in the grounds, drawing history and kabuki fans nationwide.
Origins
The exact founding date is unknown, but the shrine has been venerated since ancient times as a sanctuary of the Sumiyoshi deities.
