Yasaka Shrine is a network of approximately 2,300 shrines across Japan, all tracing their roots to Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto’s Gion district (formerly Gion-sha). The principal deity, Susanoo no Mikoto, is one of Japan’s most complex and beloved gods — a storm deity, dragon-slaying hero, and divine matchmaker who presides over protection from pestilence, marriage ties, business prosperity, and artistic endeavors.
Before the 1868 Meiji separation of Buddhism and Shinto, Yasaka Shrine was known as Gion-sha and enshrined Gozu Tenno (Bull-Headed Heavenly King), a Buddhist deity of epidemic control originating from India’s Jetavana Monastery. The shrine’s proximity to the Gion entertainment district — and the connection of “Gion” to the Sanskrit Jetavana — is a direct legacy of this syncretic history.
