Frequently Asked Questions
Yasaka Shrine: Who is Susanoo no Mikoto?
Yasaka Shrine is a network of approximately 2,300 shrines across Japan, all tracing their roots to Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto’s Gion district (formerly Gion-sha). The principal deity, Susanoo no Mikoto, is one of Japan’s most complex and beloved gods — a storm deity, dragon-slaying hero, and divine matchmaker who presides over protection from pestilence, marriage ties, business prosperity, and artistic endeavors.
Susanoo and the Gion Buddhist Fusion
Before the 1868 Meiji separation of Buddhism and Shinto, Yasaka Shrine was known as Gion-sha and enshrined Gozu Tenno (Bull-Headed Heavenly King), a Buddhist deity of epidemic control originating from India’s Jetavana Monastery. The shrine’s proximity to the Gion entertainment district — and the connection of “Gion” to the Sanskrit Jetavana — is a direct legacy of this syncretic history.

History: The Gion Festival and Nationwide Spread
In 869 CE, an epidemic swept Japan. The imperial court erected 66 halberds (matching the number of provinces) and performed the Gion Goryo-e — a ritual to appease vengeful spirits and drive out pestilence. This is the origin of the Gion Matsuri, Japan’s most celebrated festival, held every July since for over 1,100 years. The yamahoko float processions (July 17 and 24) are designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Medieval warrior clans enshrined the Gion deity across Japan seeking protection in battle. Local Yasaka shrines like Yasaka Shrine Ikuno took root through this warrior patronage.
Worship, Blessings, and Sacred Items
Key blessings include epidemic protection, evil-averting, marriage ties, business prosperity, and artistic success. Unique sacred items include:
Somin Shorai amulet: Based on a legend where Susanoo protected the kind but poor Somin Shorai from epidemic — hung at the entrance to ward off disease
Chinowa (grass ring) passing: Performed at the summer purification (late June to July) to cleanse spiritual impurity
Top Yasaka Shrines to Visit
Hikawa Shrine Sagamihara is part of the 2,000+ Hikawa shrine network in Kanto, all enshrining Susanoo. Hikawa Nyotai Shrine enshrines Kushinadahime (Susanoo’s wife) and is renowned for marriage blessings. Goryo Shrine Awajimachi on Awaji Island holds venerable Goryo faith connected to Susanoo. Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto makes a natural pairing with Yasaka Shrine for a deep Kyoto sacred circuit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Yasaka shrines and Hikawa shrines the same?
Both enshrine Susanoo no Mikoto, but they have different origins. Yasaka shrines descend from the Gion-sha / Gozu Tenno tradition centered in Kyoto; Hikawa shrines are an independent Musashino (Saitama/Tokyo) tradition. Both are valid expressions of Susanoo faith.
How many floats are in the Gion Festival?
As of 2024, 33 yamahoko floats participate: the Saki-matsuri procession (July 17) and the Ato-matsuri procession (July 24) showcase different floats through central Kyoto.
Is Kyoto’s Yasaka Shrine open at night?
Yes — the grounds are open 24 hours. The administrative office (for goshuin stamps) operates approximately 9:00–17:00. Early morning visits (before 8 AM) are particularly serene and popular.
