The Shogun Who Lectured on the Analects — Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and Genroku Culture
Tsunayoshi was deeply learned in Confucianism and personally lectured his retainers on the Analects — unprecedented for a shogun. He rebuilt Yushima Seido and promoted 'civil rule' through learning rather than force. His era saw the flowering of Genroku culture — Basho, Chikamatsu, Saikaku.
A deep read
The fifth shogun Tsunayoshi was deeply learned in Confucianism — he personally lectured his retainers on the Analects, unprecedented for a shogun. In 1690 he established Yushima Seido, a Confucius temple that grew into the Shoheizaka Academy, a source of modern Japanese higher education. His Genroku era saw town culture flourish: Basho’s haiku, Chikamatsu’s puppet plays, Saikaku’s novels, and ukiyo-e.
