Ashikaga Takauji helped Emperor Go-Daigo topple the Kamakura shogunate in 1333, then rebelled against the emperor in 1335 when warriors grew discontent with the Kenmu Restoration. He defeated Kusunoki Masashige at Minatogawa, founded the Muromachi shogunate in 1338, and triggered the 60-year Northern and Southern Courts split. Traitor or savior of warrior rule — his reputation remains divided.
