Frequently Asked Questions
Kanda Myojin (officially Kanda Jinja) is one of Tokyo’s oldest shrines, traditionally dated to 730 CE. Serving as the “Guardian of Edo”, it protected the entire Edo castle town and still holds a vast parish encompassing Kanda, Nihonbashi, Otemachi, and Akihabara. What makes this shrine unique is its seamless blend of 1,300 years of history with contemporary culture — from IT security blessings to anime pilgrimage.
What Is Kanda Myojin? — Three Deities and Founding History
Why Are Three Deities Enshrined?
Kanda Myojin enshrines three deities. The first is Onamuchi-no-Mikoto, known as Daikoku-sama, god of matchmaking and business prosperity. The second is Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, known as Ebisu-sama, god of commerce and medicine. The third is Taira no Masakado-no-Mikoto, revered by Edo commoners as a guardian against disaster and misfortune.
From 730 CE to the Present Site
The shrine was founded in 730 CE in what is now Otemachi, Chiyoda Ward. In 1309, it was relocated near Masakado’s burial mound, adding the warrior deity to its pantheon. In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu prayed here before the Battle of Sekigahara and won, deepening the shogunate’s reverence. In 1616, the shrine moved to its current hilltop location in Sotokanda.

The Kanda Festival is one of Japan’s three greatest festivals. Its Shinkosai procession of about 300 participants parades through Kanda, Nihonbashi, Otemachi, and Marunouchi — roughly 30 km in total. The following day sees approximately 200 neighborhood portable shrines converging on Kanda Myojin in a spectacular procession.
Shrine Buildings and Grounds — Architecture and Monuments
The Reinforced Concrete Shrine Built After the Great Kanto Earthquake
The current main hall was completed in 1934. After the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the old buildings, architect Oe Shintaro designed a steel-reinforced concrete structure with vermilion lacquer finish prioritizing fire resistance. This design saved the shrine from destruction in the World War II firebombings of Tokyo. The Zuishinmon gate, rebuilt in 1975, features carved guardian deities of the four cardinal directions.
Must-See Elements in the Grounds
The Daikoku-sama statue is the largest stone statue of Daikoku in Japan — approximately 6.6 m tall and weighing about 30 tons. The Ebisu-sama statue stands nearby, drawing a constant stream of visitors praying for business success. A monument to Zenigata Heiji, the fictional Edo-period detective whose home in the novels was set near Kanda Myojin, draws fans of period fiction.
EDOCCO and the Anime Pilgrimage Dimension
In 2018, the EDOCCO cultural exchange hall opened within the precinct, featuring a hall, studio, café, and shops. Because Akihabara falls within the parish, IT security blessings became a signature service — major tech companies hold New Year ceremonies here. The shrine is also a pilgrimage site for fans of the anime Love Live!, creating a genuinely rare coexistence of ancient tradition and pop culture.
Visitor’s Guide — Access, Hours, and Goshuin
Getting There
The nearest stations are JR Ochanomizu (5 min walk from Hijiri-bashi exit) and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line Ochanomizu (5 min from Exit 1). Akihabara Station is a 7-minute walk. The precinct is open 24 hours; the shrine office operates 9:00–16:00.
Best Times to Visit
The New Year period draws corporate groups for first-visit-of-the-year prayers — a distinctly Tokyo sight. The Kanda Festival in May of odd-numbered years transforms the entire parish. November is busy with Shichi-Go-San celebrations. Goshuin (seal stamps) include standard and seasonal limited editions prized by collectors. See Kanda Myojin spot details for the precinct map and latest goshuin information.
After Your Visit
The Amanoya甘酒 shop behind the shrine has served its famous sweet rice drink since the Edo period, brewing it in a traditional underground koji cellar. Combine your visit with Akihabara electronics shopping or Ochanomizu’s music and book stores.
Kanda Myojin as the Heart of Edo Commoner Culture
Being a parishioner of Kanda Myojin was a core part of Edo identity. With the merchant district of Nihonbashi in its parish, the shrine was especially vital for commerce. Today, executives from corporations headquartered in Otemachi and Marunouchi still come for New Year prayers. The shrine’s Myojin Kaikan hall conducts Shinto weddings, drawing couples who wish to marry before the deity of matchmaking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Kanda Myojin and Kanda Jinja the same place?
Yes. The formal name is Kanda Jinja (Kanda Shrine), but the colloquial name Kanda Myojin is universally used. Myojin is an honorific title from the era of Buddhist-Shinto syncretism.
Why is Taira no Masakado worshipped as a deity?
Masakado led a rebellion against the imperial court in 939 CE and was killed, but was deeply venerated by the people of the Kanto region as a local guardian. The Edo shogunate enshrined him reverently to pacify his spirit, and he continues to be worshipped today as the Third Deity, guardian against calamity.
When is the Kanda Festival held?
The full Kanda Festival is held in May of odd-numbered years (next: 2027, 2029). In even-numbered years, a smaller kage matsuri (shadow festival) takes place instead.
Do IT companies need to book blessings in advance?
Yes — advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during the busy New Year period. The shrine’s official website accepts bookings for corporate and individual IT device blessings.
How many types of goshuin are available?
In addition to the standard goshuin, seasonal and event-limited versions are distributed throughout the year. Check the official website or shrine office for current offerings; the standard fee is around 500 yen per stamp.
