At Dan-no-ura in 1185, as the Taira forces collapsed, Lady Nii carried the eight-year-old Emperor Antoku in her arms and said ‘there is a capital even beneath the waves,’ then leaped into the sea. The legendary Grass-Cutting Sword also sank — still missing today. Japan’s most famous moment of tragedy in the Tale of the Heike.
