Clouds Above the Hill: Matsuyama Walk
Walking course through Matsuya
Walking course through Matsuyama with Shiba Ryotaro's historical novel "Clouds Above the Hill" as your guide, tracing the lives of three young men of the Meiji era — cavalry commander Akiyama Yoshifuru of the Russo-Japanese War, his brother Saneyuki who planned the Battle of Tsushima, and the modernist haiku poet Masaoka Shiki. The route opens at the Akiyama Brothers Birthplace, climbs through the castle district to the Nino-maru Bansuiso villa, devotes the afternoon to Shikido and the Shiki Memorial Museum, and closes at the Dogo Onsen hot springs. Seven sites in total, mixing walking and the Iyo Railway streetcar for 7–9 km and 6–8 hours. Spring brings cherry blossoms at Matsuyama Castle, autumn the ginkgo of Bansuiso, and winter the steam rising over Dogo. The NHK special drama "Saka no Ue no Kumo" (2009–2011, starring Motoki Masahiro, Abe Hiroshi, and Kagawa Teruyuki) was filmed at many of these locations, establishing the route as a pilgrimage destination for drama and history enthusiasts alike.
