Three Surprising Facts
From Hideyoshi's Adopted Son to Ieyasu's Second Son — The Strange Fate of Komatsumaru
Yuki Hideyasu, Ieyasu's second son, was sent as a hostage to Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a condition of peace in 1585. He was later adopted by the Shimofusa Yuki clan, and after Sekigahara (1600) received the large domain of Echizen Kitanosho (later Fukui) at 670,000 koku. Hideyasu was a man of outstanding martial ability but contracted syphilis and died at age 33 in 1607. As the founder of the Echizen Matsudaira clan, the line continued as the 'Go-Renshi'—second only to the three great Tokugawa branch houses—through the Meiji Restoration. In the late Edo period, Matsudaira Shungaku (Yoshinaga) was renowned as a great lord, and the Echizen Matsudaira line carried considerable prestige.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Born in 1574 as Tokugawa Ieyasu's second son. In childhood he was sent as an adopted son to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and later also adopted into the prestigious Yuki family of Kanto—hence the name Yuki Hideyasu. At Sekigahara in 1600 he was tasked with containing Uesugi Kagekatsu's southward advance, making an indirect but important contribution to the Eastern victory. Rewarded with 670,000 koku in Echizen, he built Fukui Castle and founded the Echizen Matsudaira line. Reportedly braver than his brother Hidetada, he died in 1607 at age 34, probably from syphilis—a premature end mourned by later generations.
Personality
Reportedly brave and bold—rated more highly as a warrior than his brother Hidetada. His childhood experiences as a hostage are said to have cultivated patience and a keen judgment of people.
Historical Significance
As founder of the Echizen Matsudaira line, he established the 670,000-koku Fukui domain. The Echizen Matsudaira were accorded a special status close to the gosanke, and Matsudaira Shungaku (Yoshinaga) in the Bakumatsu era is the family's most celebrated figure.
