Poisoning Suspicions and Complex Love for Masamune — A Sengoku Mother of Fierce Character
Yoshihime, sister of Mogami Yoshiaki, married Date Terumune and bore Masamune. After Masamune lost his right eye to smallpox, she reportedly came to dislike his appearance and doted excessively on her second son Kojiro. In 1590, suspicions arose that Yoshihime had attempted to poison Masamune's food; Masamune then killed his own brother Kojiro with his own hands. Whether Yoshihime actually used poison for her son's sake, or whether it was a false accusation, remains unclear to this day. She returned to the Mogami family home; at Sekigahara, since her brother Mogami Yoshiaki sided with the East, she served as an intermediary between the Date and Mogami. Her relationship with Masamune remained complex throughout their lives, though they are said to have reconciled in her final years.
