Three Surprising Facts
Chiyo's Behind-the-Scenes Support — The Legend of the Wise Wife Who Saved for the Black Horse
Yamauchi Kazutoyo's wife Chiyo is the archetypal symbol of wifely support. In the famous story, when Nobunaga held a horse parade and Kazutoyo lacked funds for a fine horse, Chiyo presented ten gold coins she had been saving since before their marriage. Kazutoyo used the money to buy a black horse and attended the parade; Nobunaga noticed his horse, and this reportedly accelerated Kazutoyo's rise. Also, just before Sekigahara (1600), Chiyo reportedly advised Kazutoyo to offer his castle at Kakegawa to Ieyasu as a gesture of loyalty—a decision that ultimately elevated him to become the great daimyo of Tosa at 240,000 koku.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Born in 1546 as the second son of a powerful Owari lord. After his father's death he served various masters before joining Toyotomi Hideyoshi, accumulating merit to become lord of Kakegawa Castle. His wife Chiyo is legendary for saving money to buy her husband a fine horse—the archetype of wifely support in Japanese culture. At Sekigahara in 1600, when Ieyasu was departing to fight the Uesugi, Kazutoyo offered to hand over his own castle of Kakegawa—read as a declaration of loyalty that Ieyasu greatly valued. As a reward he was granted Tosa at 200,000 koku and built Kochi Castle, founding the Tosa domain. He died in 1605 at age 60.
