生涯
A shogunal vassal. In 1868, sent by Katsu Kaishū, he met Saigō Takamori at Sumpu and opened the way to the bloodless surrender of Edo. After the Restoration he served Emperor Meiji as chamberlain for ten years and founded the Mutō-ryū school of swordsmanship—a master of sword, Zen, and calligraphy.
