Birthplace and origins uncertain. Discovered by the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō, he conquered the Kansei era with his close-up bijin-ga prints. His blend of idealized beauty and psychological depth earned worldwide acclaim. Shackled in 1804 for a controversial print, he died two years later.
