Born seventh son of Hōjō Ujiyasu, he was sent as adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin to seal the Sōetsu alliance, taking the name Kagetora. After Kenshin's sudden death in 1578 he fought the rival heir Kagekatsu in the Otate Disturbance and, defeated, took his own life.
