Hoji Conflict
In June 1247, tensions between the powerful Miura clan and regent Hojo Tokiyori erupted in Kamakura. Miura Yasumura was the bakufu's second most powerful figure, but Tokiyori's grandfather Adachi Kagemori feared Miura power and conspired with the Adachi to attack. The Miura brothers Yasumura and Mitsumura barricaded themselves in the Hokkedo (Yoritomo's mausoleum) and committed suicide with 500 retainers. The destruction of the Miura—founding vassals of the bakufu—established Hojo Tokuso absolute rule and shifted the bakufu toward Hojo dictatorship.
