生涯
Born in 1138, a local strongman of Izu Province. His life changed when his daughter Masako married Minamoto no Yoritomo, and he fully backed Yoritomo's uprising of 1180. In the early Kamakura Shogunate he held both the mandokoro and samuraidokoro simultaneously. After Yoritomo's death he emerged as the de facto supreme power, orchestrating the destruction of the Hiki clan in 1203 and becoming the first regent. But swayed by his second wife Lady Maki's ambitions, he had the powerful Hatakeyama Shigetada killed in 1205. When he further attempted to replace Shogun Sanetomo with his son-in-law (the Maki Incident), his own son Yoshitoki and daughter Masako acted first and exiled him to Izu. He died at 77. He is the founder of Hojo regent rule.

When Yoriie fell ill, Tokimasa seized the opportunity. Yoriie's heir Ichiman was killed at age 6, and Yoriie was confined to Shuzenji temple in Izu, where he was murdered the following year. This incident gave the Hojo complete control of the shogunate.
