A samurai of Satsuma Domain who became feared in Bakumatsu Kyoto as the "Satsuma Assassin" for carrying out numerous assassinations in the name of divine retribution. He served as a deadly agent of the pro-emperor expulsion movement, combining sharp swordsmanship with bold resolve. In 1863 he fell under suspicion for the assassination of court noble Anenokoji Kintomo and faced interrogation as a Satsuma samurai. To protect his warrior's honor, he thrust his own blade into his throat during questioning and died, aged 31. His dramatic end has been passed down as emblematic of the Bakumatsu loyalist spirit.
