Three Surprising Facts
The Power Struggle After Honnoji — The Last Stand of the Kanto Kanreidai Between Nobunaga's Sons
Takigawa Kazumasu had been assigned by Nobunaga just before the Honnoji Incident (1582) to serve as Kanto Kanreidai (lord of Kozuke Umabayashi Castle), spearheading the Oda advance into the Kanto. Receiving news of the incident, he rushed to return west but was defeated by Hojo Ujinao's large army at the Battle of Kannagawa, losing all his Kanto territory. Back in central Japan, he participated in the Kiyosu Conference power struggle between Shibata and Hideyoshi, but was defeated alongside Shibata Katsuie at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583. In his final years he submitted to Hideyoshi as a vassal, received Ise-Nagashima at 50,000 koku, and died in 1586. Among Nobunaga's retainers, he is remembered for experiencing some of the most dramatic reversals of fortune.
