Born c. 1390, second son of Kai shugo Takeda Nobumitsu. Joined the Uesugi Zenshu Rebellion, later served Koga Kubo Ashikaga Shigeuji, attacking Kisai Castle with Satomi Yoshizane in 1455. Around 1456, on Shigeuji's orders, he advanced into and seized Kazusa Province, building Chonan and Mariyatsu Castles around 1458. He based himself at Chonan, entrusting Mariyatsu to a branch of his family, who later took the surname "Mariyatsu." He died in Kazusa in 1477 around age eighty.
Personality
Tradition portrays a man of considerable initiative, surviving suspicion in Kai through loyal service to the Koga Kubo and carving out new territory in Kazusa even in advanced age.
Historical Significance
Under his descendants the Mariyatsu clan, the castle grew powerful enough to claim the Boso Kanrei title and helped install Ashikaga Yoshiaki as Oyumi Kubo. The ruins are a designated Kisarazu historic site.
