The Sorrowing Prisoner: Jumping into the Sea at Dan-no-ura, Only to Be Pulled Back
When the Taira were annihilated at Dan-no-ura and his mother Nii no Ama drowned with young Emperor Antoku, Munemori also jumped into the sea—but was pulled out and taken prisoner by Minamoto soldiers. During his transport to Kamakura, he pleaded for the life of his son Kiyomune before his own execution, but was refused. He was beheaded alongside his son at Shinohara in Omi. Criticized by posterity against the backdrop of his mother's and the emperor's dignified deaths, the human dimension of his fatherly love nonetheless survives in the retelling.
