Before Dawn at Fuji — The Farewell Words Sent to His Lover on the Night of the Vendetta
According to the Tale of the Soga, on the eve of the vendetta, Juro sent a letter to Tora Gozen at Oiso saying in effect, "Tonight is the night of our resolve. I may never see you again." The brothers then raided Suketsune's camp and achieved their vengeance. But Juro was cut down in the melee by Nitta Tadatsune at age 22. Upon receiving the news, Tora Gozen wept bitterly. The following year, at 19, she took Buddhist vows and is said to have spent her days in devotion at Zenko-ji. This tragic-romance episode has been performed repeatedly in Noh and Kabuki, capturing people's hearts across generations by portraying Juro not merely as a man of revenge, but one who embodied both love and duty.
