Spreading Urasenke Worldwide — International Exchange Through Tea
The successive heads of Urasenke have spread the wabi-cha tradition both within Japan and abroad from their base at Konnichian. Modern heads in particular have actively promoted tea ceremony internationally, establishing Urasenke branches worldwide. Under the spirit of 'ichigo ichie' (once-in-a-lifetime encounter), they have used tea as a venue for international exchange, playing a major role in promoting Japanese culture globally.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Born in 1622 as the fourth son of Sen Sotan, with the go name Senso. When his father Sotan transferred the Konnichi'an to him, he became the first head of Urasenke. The name "Urasenke" derives from the Konnichi'an located on the "back" (ura) side of the Sen property. He served for many years as tea master to the Maeda clan of Kaga, greatly contributing to the development of tea culture in the Hokuriku region. While grounding himself in his father Sotan's wabi spirit, he also organized dignified temae suited to the daimyo warrior culture. He continued promoting tea while traveling between Kanazawa and Kyoto until his later years, dying in 1697 at age 76. Today Urasenke holds the largest number of students among the three Sen houses and plays a central role in international tea promotion under the motto "Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea." The seeds Senso planted grew into a worldwide cultural exchange.
Personality
While inheriting his father's spirit of austerity, he was open and proactive, with an enterprising temperament that sought to open tea to broader society.
Historical Significance
Urasenke has grown into the world's largest tea school with many international branches. Under the motto "Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea," it greatly contributes to globalizing tea ceremony.
