Three Surprising Facts
The Brilliant Stratagem at Nagashino — The Surprise Attack on Tobigasuzan That Cut Off Takeda's Retreat
At the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, Sakai Tadatsugu led a detachment of 500 in a surprise assault that captured the Tobigasuzan fortress, held by Takeda forces. Carried out the day before the main battle, this action cut off the Takeda army's retreat and disrupted their rear. Tadatsugu's surprise attack is credited with significantly contributing to the crushing victory of the Oda-Tokugawa combined forces the following day, achieved through the famous three-volley volley fire behind palisades. Though Tadatsugu fought in many battles as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, the storming of Tobigasuzan is regarded as his greatest military achievement. The Sakai clan, later lords of Dewa-Shonai, survived as the 'foremost fudai daimyo' through the Meiji Restoration.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Born in 1527 as son of a Mikawa warrior. He served the Tokugawa (then Matsudaira) from the era of Ieyasu's father Hirotada. He supported Ieyasu's break from the Imagawa in 1560 and helped suppress the Mikawa Ikko-ikki in 1563. At the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, he executed a brilliant flanking maneuver, capturing the Tobigasu-yama fort behind the Takeda lines—a key contribution to the victory. The senior and longest-serving among the Four Tokugawa Generals, he was the most respected elder of the Mikawa retainers. In his final years he was forced into retirement due to his son's blunders in Korea, and died in 1596 at age 70.
Personality
Sincere and loyal, possessing the dignity of a senior elder retainer. As seen at Nagashino, he had excellent situational judgment and decisiveness. His late-life retirement can be read as an expression of parental love and responsibility for his son's failures.
Historical Significance
The flanking capture of Tobigasu-yama at Nagashino is remembered as a celebrated tactical maneuver in military history. The Sakai clan was granted the leading fudai position under the Tokugawa and survived as lords of Shonai until the Meiji era.
