Born Satō Norikiyo. A guard of the Hokumen, he took Buddhist vows at 23 and wandered the country with cherry blossoms and the moon as his companions. His Sankashū and 94 poems in the Shinkokin Wakashū profoundly influenced later poets including Bashō.
