生涯
Born to the headman of Izumozaki in Echigo and trained under the Sōtō master Daichū Kokusen. He never held a temple, living at the Gogō-an hermitage and playing temari with village children in saintly poverty. Renowned in calligraphy, waka, and Chinese poetry, he is also famous for his late-life friendship with the nun Teishin.
