Ono no Azumahito was a Nara-period military commander and court noble. In 724, while suppressing an Emishi uprising, he is credited with building Taga Fort (Taga Castle) in Mutsu Province, and his name is inscribed on the Taga Castle Stele. On September 14, 729, he was appointed Chinju Shogun (Pacification General) of Mutsu Province, administering the Tohoku region from Taga Castle, the core seat of the Mutsu provincial government and garrison headquarters for negotiations and military affairs with the Emishi. In 737 he proposed and carried out the opening of a direct road from Taga Fort to Dewa Fort, handling the practical administration of the ritsuryo state's control over Tohoku. On April 21, 739 he was promoted to sangi (councilor), joining the ranks of the court nobility, and died on November 2, 742.

A practically minded general who supported the ritsuryo state's administration of Tohoku through both military and civil affairs, demonstrating realistic governance vision such as his proposal to open new roads.

Taga Castle, which he is credited with founding, continued to serve as the core seat of Mutsu provincial government and garrison headquarters into the mid-Heian period. The site is now a Special National Historic Site, and the Taga Castle Stele survives as one of "Japan's Three Ancient Steles."
