Three Surprising Facts
Welcoming the Escaped Emperor Go-Daigo at Mount Funakami — A Life-Changing Decision
In 1333, Emperor Go-Daigo, having escaped his exile on Oki Island, reached Hoki Province. Nawa Nagatoshi welcomed the emperor at Mount Funakami (near present-day Daisen-cho, Tottori) and raised arms against the shogunate. The mountain's rugged terrain was ideal for repelling shogunate pursuers, and Nagatoshi protected the emperor's safety there for over a month. During this time, Ashikaga Takauji and Nitta Yoshisada raised arms at various locations, setting off the chain of events that destroyed the Kamakura Shogunate. Nagatoshi's decision was a crucial move that made Emperor Go-Daigo's restoration possible.

Full Biography
From birth to death
A local magnate and maritime trader of Hoki Province (present-day western Tottori Prefecture). In 1333, when Emperor Go-Daigo escaped exile on Oki Island, Nagatoshi welcomed him at Mount Funakami and raised an army. He repelled shogunate pursuers using the mountain's steep terrain, crucially securing the emperor's safety. Under the Kenmu Restoration, he was one of the "Three Trees and One Grass" (Kusunoki Masashige, Yuki Chikamitsu, Chigusa Tadaaki, and Nawa Nagatoshi) trusted by the emperor and appointed Governor of Inaba. In 1336, he fought in the defense of Kyoto against Takauji's rebellion and died in battle. His rise illustrates how provincial magnates enriched by maritime trade became key supporters of the imperial cause in the late Kamakura period.
Personality
A provincial strongman with the decisiveness and drive cultivated through maritime trade. He combined instant loyalty in the emperor's hour of need with practical military skill in exploiting rugged terrain.
Historical Significance
The raising of arms at Mount Funakami was a critical catalyst for the Kenmu Restoration. Nawa Shrine in Tottori Prefecture survives today, enshrining Nagatoshi.
