Three Surprising Facts
The Shadow Ruler Who Surpassed the Regent — Symbol of the Shogunate's Corruption
Nagasaki Takasuke nominally held the post of uchikanrei, but in reality wielded power surpassing the 14th regent Hojo Takatoki, monopolizing the shogunate's government. The Taiheiki records that Takasuke decided lawsuits through bribery, creating a situation described as "with money, wrong becomes right." While Takatoki obsessed over dog fights and dengaku, Takasuke ran all practical matters—but his despotism bred nationwide vassal discontent. When Nitta Yoshisada destroyed the Hojo in 1333, Takasuke too committed suicide at Tosho-ji.

Full Biography
From birth to death
A powerful tokuso retainer (vassal of the Hojo tokuso house) who held the post of uchikanrei in the final years of the Kamakura shogunate. His father was Nagasaki Takatsuna (Enki). As confidant of the 14th shikken Hojo Takatoki, he seized effective control of the government, wielding power exceeding that of the regent and cosigner. The Taiheiki and other sources accuse him of rampant bribery, swaying legal verdicts with money. While Takatoki indulged in dog fights and dengaku entertainment, Takasuke effectively ran the shogunate—but his despotism bred vassal discontent and accelerated the regime's decline. When Nitta Yoshisada attacked Kamakura in 1333, Takasuke committed suicide at Tosho-ji alongside Takatoki, ending the Hojo regime and its retainer network.
Personality
Portrayed as a power-hungry figure who monopolized government through bribery. Yet his role as a capable administrator holding the shogunate together in its chaotic final years cannot be entirely dismissed.
Historical Significance
Autocratic rule by the uchikanrei is considered a direct cause of the shogunate's fall. The structural problem of tokuso retainers surpassing the regent in power revealed the fundamental limits of the Kamakura political system.
