A disciple of Kinoshita Jun'an, fellow student with Arai Hakuseki. He took part in drafting the Shōtoku Code and served Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshimune as lecturer. His Sundai Zatsuwa, expounding Confucian ethics in plain language, became a widely read self-cultivation manual of the Edo period.
