Three Surprising Facts
The Honno-ji Incident — A 17-Year-Old's Final Stand
In the predawn hours of June 2, 1582, Akechi Mitsuhide's army surrounded Honno-ji. Ranmaru was among the first to notice and reportedly told Nobunaga: 'They appear to be Akechi's men.' Nobunaga answered 'Zehi ni oyobazu' ('It cannot be helped') and took up a bow to fight. Ranmaru drew his sword and fought back; even after Nobunaga took his own life amid the flames, Ranmaru and his brothers continued fighting to the end. At just 18, he shared his lord's fate—an image of loyalty that has been celebrated through the centuries.
