Famous Anecdotes
The Desperate Stand at Kinugasa Castle — His Father's Death and Yoshizumi's Escape
In August 1180, shortly after Yoritomo's uprising, a large Taira force bore down on the Miura Peninsula. Yoshizumi's father Yoshiaki resolved to hold Kinugasa Castle—"I am old; I will be the shield for the clan's escape"—and held off the enemy. Thanks to Yoshiaki's sacrifice, Yoshizumi and the clan escaped by sea to Awa Province. Yoshiaki died in the fighting. Through his father's selfless last stand, the clan survived to join Yoritomo, laying the foundation for the Miura to become one of the Kamakura Shogunate's greatest vassal houses.
