Born in Tanba. Trained in Kanō, Western, and Chinese styles, he established a realist mode rooted in thorough sketching from life. Becoming the dominant force in the Kyoto art world, his Maruyama school formed one of the two great currents of early modern painting alongside the Shijō school.
