Three Surprising Facts
The Defection at Sekigahara — The Maeda's Decision to Abandon Their Father's Course
Maeda Toshinaga sided with the Eastern forces at Sekigahara in 1600, in sharp contrast to his father Toshiie, who had maintained a pro-Western stance as one of the Five Elders. This decision arose from personal animosity toward Ishida Mitsunari and a pragmatic political calculation about the Tokugawa. The Maeda, the largest outside daimyo after the Tokugawa with their million-koku Kaga domain, secured Kaga's survival through Eastern participation. Toshinaga continued demonstrating loyalty to Ieyasu after the war, ensuring the Kaga million-koku domain's safety. The contrasting choices of father Toshiie's Toyotomi loyalty and son Toshinaga's Tokugawa submission symbolize the Maeda's complex position.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Born in 1562 as heir to Maeda Toshiie, the lord who established the million-koku Kaga domain. He served as a page to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and distinguished himself in various campaigns. After his father died in 1599 he succeeded as head of the Maeda. Initially leaning toward the Toyotomi side, he ultimately chose reconciliation with Ieyasu before Sekigahara, sending his mother Lady Hoshun-in as a hostage to Edo. He took a broadly neutral stance at Sekigahara but actively cooperated with Tokugawa afterward, securing his domain in Kaga, Etchu, and Noto. He then developed Takaoka as a castle town and died in 1614 at age 53, remembered as a steady ruler who preserved his father's legacy.
Personality
Cautious and practical in judgment, he placed preservation of his father's legacy above all. He skillfully navigated the turbulent period around Sekigahara and secured the survival and prosperity of the Maeda—an able politician as well as lord.
Historical Significance
The castle town of Takaoka that Toshinaga developed became the foundation of present-day Takaoka City. The Maeda family survived as the lords of million-koku Kaga until the Meiji era, the largest outside domain under the Tokugawa.
