Third son of Mōri Motonari. Adopted into the Kobayakawa, with his brother Kikkawa Motoharu he became one of the "Two Rivers" pillars of Mōri rule. Said to have shrewdly let Hideyoshi withdraw after Honnō-ji. Trusted by Hideyoshi, he became one of the Five Elders.
