"Jinno Shotoki" — A Masterwork of Imperial Legitimacy Written as the Castle Was About to Fall
Kitabatake Chikafusa wrote the "Jinno Shotoki" in 1339 as the Northern Court forces besieged Oda Castle in Hitachi Province. This work proving the Southern Court's legitimacy through possession of the Three Sacred Treasures was not mere political propaganda—it possessed philosophical depth, interpreting history through moral concepts of honesty, benevolence, purity, and courage. Tokugawa Mitsukuni of the Mito domain (famous as "Mito Komon") valued it highly, and it profoundly influenced later Mito scholarship and Meiji-era imperial historiography.
