Son of Minamoto no Takakuni. A Tendai monk based at Onjō-ji and Shitennō-ji who rose to the highest rank of Daisōjō. As his residence was in Toba, he is called Toba Sōjō. Tradition credits him as author of the Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga, regarded as Japan's earliest manga.
