Three Surprising Facts
"Gukansho" — The History That Recognized Warrior Rule as Historical Inevitability
Written by Jien just before the Jokyu War, the "Gukansho" interpreted Japanese history from Emperor Jimmu to Emperor Juntoku through the concept of "dori" (reason). Remarkably, despite being from the regent family of courtiers, Jien soberly recognized the rise of warrior power as a historical inevitability, analyzing it rather than condemning it. As Japan's first philosophy of history, it influenced later works including Kitabatake Chikafusa's Jinno Shotoki.
