生涯
The 4th shikken of the Kamakura shogunate. Eldest son of Hojo Tokiuji, he became regent in 1242 at just 19 after his grandfather Yasutoki's death. During his tenure, he removed Fujiwara Yoritsune from the shogunal post and installed his son Fujiwara Yoritsugu as the 5th shogun. He also guarded against anti-Hojo movements by Kujo Michiie and others. However, he was frail and died of illness in 1246 at 23, after only four years in office. The position passed to his younger brother Tokiyori. Despite his brief rule, he is credited with maintaining stability and continuing Yasutoki's policies.

A diligent young leader who faithfully upheld his grandfather Yasutoki's political legacy. Despite frail health, he decisively executed critical policies such as the shogunal succession.
Historical Significance
Though short-lived, he preserved Yasutoki's political legacy and ensured a smooth transition to Tokiyori. He is seen as having laid the groundwork for his brother's celebrated regency.
Famous Anecdotes
A 19-Year-Old Regent Who Banished the Shogun
Hojo Tsunetoki became the fourth regent in 1242 at just 19, following his grandfather Yasutoki's death. Soon after taking office, he detected anti-Hojo stirrings around Shogun Fujiwara Yoritsune and in 1244 sent Yoritsune back to Kyoto, installing Yoritsune's son Yoritsugu as the fifth shogun. His bold execution of this critically important policy of replacing the shogun at such a young age is highly regarded. However, frail from illness, he died in 1246 at only 23 and passed the regency to his younger brother Tokiyori.
