Three Surprising Facts
The Nakasendai Rebellion — Briefly Recapturing Kamakura in the Dream of Hojo Restoration
In July 1335, Hojo Tokiyuki raised arms with support from former shogunate warriors including the Suwa clan of Shinano and swiftly recaptured Kamakura, routing Ashikaga Tadayoshi. However, Takauji marched east without shogunate authorization and crushed the uprising. This rebellion gave Takauji a pretext to break with the Kenmu government, becoming a historical turning point that triggered the North-South Court era. Tokiyuki has recently gained renewed attention as the hero of Yusei Matsui's manga "The Elusive Samurai."

Full Biography
From birth to death
Son of Hojo Takatoki, the last tokuso of the Kamakura shogunate. When the shogunate fell in 1333, he was still a child and escaped to Shinano Province under the protection of retainer Suwa Yorishige. In 1335, he raised an army in Shinano to restore Hojo rule, launching the "Nakasendai Rebellion." Supported by Shinano warriors including the Suwa and Shigeno clans, he briefly recaptured Kamakura and routed Ashikaga Tadayoshi. However, Ashikaga Takauji marched east and crushed the uprising. Tokiyuki fled and continued to fight for the Southern Court, staging repeated uprisings, but was finally captured and executed around 1353. He is remembered as a tragic young warrior who devoted his life to the impossible dream of Hojo restoration.
Personality
An indomitable young warrior who, despite losing his clan as a child, never abandoned the dream of Hojo restoration. His tenacity in rising again after each defeat was fueled by deep loyalty to his fallen family.
Historical Significance
The Nakasendai Rebellion gave Takauji a pretext to march east, triggering the collapse of the Kenmu government and the North-South Court schism. Recently, Tokiyuki gained fame as the protagonist of the manga "The Elusive Samurai."
