Yasutoki's Grief — The Heir's Death at 28
Hojo Tokiuji was the heir Yasutoki had raised with great care, and he had accompanied his father on the march to Kyoto in the Jokyu War (1221), showing every promise of a distinguished future. However, in 1230 he died suddenly of illness at 27 (or 28), leaving his father Yasutoki grief-stricken. After losing his eldest son, Yasutoki carefully raised Tokiuji's children. The elder, Tsunetoki, became the fourth regent, and the younger, Tokiyori, became the fifth; Tokiuji's lineage continued as the main tokuso line supporting the shogunate. Some say Yasutoki's grief over losing his heir was reflected in his devoted effort to promulgate the Joei Code (1232).
