Three Surprising Facts
Yasutoki's Grief — The Heir's Death at 28
Hojo Tokiuji was the heir Yasutoki had raised with great care, and he had accompanied his father on the march to Kyoto in the Jokyu War (1221), showing every promise of a distinguished future. However, in 1230 he died suddenly of illness at 27 (or 28), leaving his father Yasutoki grief-stricken. After losing his eldest son, Yasutoki carefully raised Tokiuji's children. The elder, Tsunetoki, became the fourth regent, and the younger, Tokiyori, became the fifth; Tokiuji's lineage continued as the main tokuso line supporting the shogunate. Some say Yasutoki's grief over losing his heir was reflected in his devoted effort to promulgate the Joei Code (1232).

Full Biography
From birth to death
Eldest son of Hojo Yasutoki, the 3rd shikken of the Kamakura shogunate. His mother was a daughter of Miura Yoshimura (Yabe Zenni). Groomed as heir, he participated in government from a young age and joined the march on Kyoto during the Jokyu War (1221). While Yasutoki stabilized the shogunate, Tokiuji assisted in governance and showed promise as the next regent. However, he died of illness in 1230 at just 28, deeply grieving his father. His premature death affected Hojo succession, and his sons Tsunetoki and Tokiyori became the 4th and 5th shikken respectively.
Personality
A capable heir who lived up to his father Yasutoki's expectations. He demonstrated talent in both martial arts and governance, supporting the shogunate from a young age.
Historical Significance
Though he never became shikken, his lineage produced the 4th and 5th regents (Tsunetoki and Tokiyori), forming the main tokuso line of the Hojo clan.
