Three Surprising Facts
The Co-regent Who Supported the Shogunate Through Two Mongol Invasions
Hojo Nobutoki served in key administrative and judicial roles during the two Mongol invasions—the Battle of Bun'ei (1274) and the Battle of Koan (1281). Amid this unprecedented national crisis, maintaining stable internal administration was as vital as external defense. Nobutoki ultimately rose to rensho—the shogunate's second-highest post—as the regent's formal assistant. As a grandson of Hojo Tokifusa, the first rensho, he held the same office two generations later, illustrating the Hojo family's administrative continuity.
