Dying with 432 Retainers at Renge-ji
In the 5th month of 1333, Rokuhara fell to Emperor Go-Daigo's forces. The 27-year-old Nakatoki attempted to flee east with Emperor Kogon but was blocked at Banba-juku in Omi. There he and 432 retainers and kinsmen chanted the nembutsu together and committed suicide at Renge-ji. The temple still preserves the death register of all 432 names.

Full Biography
From birth to death
Of the Hojo Fuonji branch, he served as Northern Rokuhara Tandai, maintaining order in Kyoto and overseeing the court. In 1333, Rokuhara fell to forces supporting Emperor Go-Daigo. He attempted to flee eastward with Emperor Kogon but was blocked at Banba-juku in Omi by Ashikaga and Sasaki forces. He committed suicide at Renge-ji with 432 retainers and kinsmen, at the age of 27.
