Three Surprising Facts
Regent in the Shadow of Tokiyori — A Stand-In Statesman
When Hojo Nagatoki became regent in 1256, his predecessor Hojo Tokiyori resigned and took Buddhist vows citing illness—yet in reality Tokiyori continued to hold real power from behind the scenes as "Saimyōji Zenmon." Nagatoki occupied the formal role of regent on the public stage while carrying out actual governance in line with Tokiyori's wishes—a delicate position. In this transitional period of growing tokusō autocracy, his maintenance of the moderate Gokurakuji branch traditions and stable administration contributed to preserving order within the Kamakura shogunate.
