Three Surprising Facts
The Last Regent of Kamakura — Final Hours at Tosho-ji
Hojo Mototoki served as the thirteenth regent in the Kamakura Shogunate's final days. In May 1333, as Emperor Go-Daigo's anti-shogunate movement reached its climax, Ashikaga Takauji seized the Rokuhara Tandai and Nitta Yoshisada's army marched on Kamakura. Mototoki fought to the last to defend the shogunate but could not prevail, and on May 22 he committed suicide at Tosho-ji alongside Hojo Takatoki and the clan. He was 47. Over 800 people reportedly died by suicide that same day. As the thirteenth regent, he witnessed the end of a shogunate that had lasted more than 150 years. In a historical irony, his relative Akahashi Toko was the principal wife of the very Ashikaga Takauji who destroyed Kamakura, carrying Hojo blood into the Muromachi shogunate.
