Born in 1286, of the Akahashi branch of the Hojo descended from Hojo Yoshitoki. He became the thirteenth regent in 1311, succeeding the twelfth regent Hojo Hirotoki. During his tenure, Emperor Go-Daigo's overthrow movement intensified (the Genko Incident, 1331), and the shogunate twice exiled him to Oki. When Go-Daigo escaped in 1333 and anti-shogunate forces rose nationwide, Ashikaga Takauji defected and seized the Rokuhara Tandai, while Nitta Yoshisada's army marched on Kamakura. Mototoki fought to defend the shogunate but could not prevail. On May 22, 1333, he committed suicide at Tosho-ji alongside Hojo Takatoki and the clan. He was 47. He is remembered as the regent who witnessed the end of the Kamakura Shogunate after more than 150 years.
