Three Surprising Facts
The Last Regent Who Watched His Brother-in-Law Ashikaga Takauji Betray the Shogunate
Hojo Moritoki's sister Akahashi Toko was the principal wife of Ashikaga Takauji, making Moritoki and Takauji brothers-in-law. In 1333, as Emperor Go-Daigo's anti-shogunate movement intensified, Takauji defected from the shogunate and seized the Rokuhara Tandai. Betrayed by his own brother-in-law, Moritoki as the last regent rode out personally to meet Nitta Yoshisada's assault on Kamakura, fought fiercely at the Battle of Suzaki, and died by his own hand. He is said to have composed a death poem: "The battle's wave — I do not resist the flow of time, floating as a wave upon the river." Caught between personal tragedy and public duty, he died as a samurai to the last.

Full Biography
From birth to death
The 16th and last shikken of the Kamakura shogunate. From the Akahashi branch of the Hojo clan, his sister Akahashi Toko later married Ashikaga Takauji. He became regent in 1326, but by then the office was largely ceremonial, with real power held by the uchikanrei Nagasaki Takasuke and other tokuso retainers. In 1333, as Emperor Go-Daigo's anti-shogunate movement spread, Ashikaga Takauji destroyed the Rokuhara Tandai and Nitta Yoshisada marched on Kamakura. Moritoki rode out to meet Nitta's forces at the Battle of Suzaki, but after fierce fighting took his own life, ending 150 years of Hojo regental rule.
Personality
Despite holding a hollow title, he upheld the warrior's pride to the end, riding into battle himself. His anguish as his brother-in-law Takauji betrayed the shogunate can only be imagined.
Historical Significance
He stands as the final figure of Hojo regental rule and a symbol of the Kamakura shogunate's fall. Through his sister Toko's marriage to Takauji, the Hojo were connected to the Ashikaga, indirectly linking to the Muromachi shogunate's founding.
