A kinsman of the Northern Fujiwara who, together with his brother Sueira, governed Hizume Manor in Shiwa District. When Yoritomo's army advanced during the 1189 Oshu Campaign, he burned his residence and fled north, but on September 15, tradition holds, he led his family to Kuriyagawa Fortress and surrendered to Yoritomo. His deep devotion to the Lotus Sutra is said to have moved Yoritomo to mercy, and his home territory of Hizume was confirmed as his own.
