Himiko, Queen of Yamatai — The Mysterious Shaman-Queen Depicted in the Wei Zhi Wajinden
Himiko is said to be the queen of Yamatai in the 3rd century, described in detail in the Chinese historical text Wei Zhi Wajinden. She governed through kido (shamanistic ritual) with a younger brother assisting in political affairs. In 239 she sent an envoy to Wei (China) and received the title 'Queen of Wa Friendly to Wei' and a gold seal. Where Yamatai was located (the Kinai theory vs. northern Kyushu theory) remains one of the greatest ongoing mysteries in Japanese history.
